IDK. I guess they went to the proper authorities and outlined any possible relation. It goes a little something like this:

Marvin and Mary had a son, Kevin. Mary then had another son by Joe, Mark. Marvin's sister has a daughter, Sara. So Sara and Mark are married. No blood relation, but still.

Besides how come in a world the size of this one why is it so important that one get involved with another who is so close as to be suspect anyway?

Maybe people are lazy. They don't want to put forth the effort to go out into this vast world in search of a mate. It's easier to just go into the next bedroom. I know two other people who grew up in the same house and ended up married. No relation, but still too close for comfort.
