I guess I was right about how the “Keating 5″ would be brought into the campaign.* This afternoon, the Obama campaign released a 13-minute “documentary” about McCain’s role in the Keating 5 scandal.* Charles Keating was the head of a failed bank, Lincoln Savings and Loan.* McCain was one of five senators accused of using their influence to have federal regulators look the other way on behalf of Keating.* Though McCain was cleared of corruption charges, the Senate ethics committee stated that he exercised “poor judgement” in this matter.
McCain had
known Keating for nearly a decade at this point. In fact, Keating held fundraisers for McCain’s House campaigns in 1982 and 1983.* Keating and his associates had donated about $112,000 to McCain’s political campaigns between 1982-1987.
This issue ties in with the narrative the Obama campaign is trying to create about McCain.* They call him “erratic”, accuse him of lacking good judgement and point to his disdain for regulation that don’t benefit corporate fatcats.
