It’s been a minute since I’ve posted.* It’s not like I haven’t had anything to say but, I have just found myself taken aback by the past couple of weeks and have been trying to take it all in.
You see, I have seen Barack Obama hit his stride while John McCain seems to be imploding.* Yesterday,
McCain “suspended” his campaign, supposedly in attempts to head back to Washington to work on the economic bailout negotiations.* Problem: McCain is not on any committee that even would be working on this crisis.* So, what we actually saw was a publicity stunt on his part to stage a photo op with the President, hoping to show how he comes in and gets things done.* Well, it didn’t work.* Right now,
the bailout plan is falling apart and some are saying that McCain’s presence actually hurt the chances for a deal.
With that being said, McCain is saying that he may still be a no-show for tonight’s debate.* My opinion: it’s all games.
First of all, McCain finds himself campaigning for a job in the midst of what could be the biggest economic crisis since the Great Depression, one that in no small part seems due to the heavy push for more and more deregulation over the last 30 years by Republicans.* On this, the most pressing issue of the day, McCain has already admitted that he doesn’t know much about the economy.
Secondly, the narrative continues about the number of lobbyists running his campaign.* This time, it is his campaign manager, Rick Davis, who is under scrutiny.* It appears that, since 2000, both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (the two lenders that the government just took over to the tune of some $200 billion) have been paying Davis’ firm to lobby for them (to be fair, Obama has his own issue with this in the person of Jim Johnson, form chair of Fannie Mae and his ties to the Obama campaign) but, it looks bad to have the people with ties to these failed firms actually involved in the day-to-day running of your campaign.
Finally, you have the “Palin problem”.* Every time she speaks, it is clear that, outside of talking points, she doesn’t have many answers.* In the interviews with Katie Couric, broadcast on Wednesday and Thursday, it was clear that she was the the human equivalent of the “Magic 8 Ball”.* She had a very limited set of answers, even if they weren’t to the question being asked.* So, last night, you heard McCain trying to even push for
a delay of the vice-presidential debates.* After what I’ve heard from Palin, I could see why.
My prediction:* McCain will be at the debates.* Right now, the America people, each day, are seeing how he is cracking under the pressure of a job he is still just interviewing for so, this is why a lot of tracking polls (I consider trends and not simply daily numbers) show that momentum has swung to Obama.* This is probably the reason for the recent episode of “McCain Goes to Washington.”* McCain can’t afford to not go in front of the people and tell them what his plans are.* So, I say “game on!”
I’ll be watching tomorrow night.
