Post Jesse Jackson…How does that foot taste?

07-10-2008 10:11 AM

Look, Jesse Jackson is a grown man and entititled to his opinion. He can say what he wants to say about Obama but, if he’s going to do so, he should either express them in a better way or, at least, be mindful of his surroundings.

This past Sunday, Jackson was on the Fox News Channel.* In a segment discussing Barack Obama’s recent comments about African American men needing to be more responsible fathers, Jackson was off-camera and whispering with another guest on the show.* However, Jackson had a live microphone attached to him and it captured him saying that “Barack, he’s talking down to black people” and said of Obama that he wanted to “cut his nuts off.”

Look, I didn’t necessarily care for all of Obama’s comments in regards to this issue either.* I feel that he has no problem singling out black people to chastise them but doesn’t appear willing to address the concerns of black people specifically. So, I can see from where the hard feelings came.* However, Jackson could have better articulated those concerns and done it in a more public way.* Or, if he had to express them in the way he did, he could have done it in a more private setting.

Being a news channel, Fox held on to his comments for three days and aired them on their highest-rated show.

When Jackson found out they would be airing the comments, he called Obama to apologize and made a public apology, as well.

My take:* in the end, this is a much bigger deal to White America than it is to Black America.* For some reason, they are trying to make this to be some issue between black leadership that is somehow going to rip Black America in half.* The fact of the matter is that, I believe, most of us aren’t looking to either for our salvation.* While this might make interesting news, it really doen’t have any overall effect on the status quo.* To me, it may only serve to increase the comfort level of Obama with some white Americans who don’t care much for Jesse Jackson.

I have included a video showing part of his comments and part of his apology for them below:

I like that. Nice summary Jaypee.

When a similar question was posed to me, this was my response:

Nah Jesse J is cool, its Jesse J Jr that stepped in the brown stuff. Sr is a professional politician and preacher. The statements that that guy named Ellison made about the sacrifices of the people of the 60s being outdated and Obama bringing a new style of politician should've offended any child of that era who was involved in civil rights activities to any degree.

Now, imo, for Jr to stand up and make those remarks about his father to the national media, now that was just ugly. Sure Jesse was wrong to make not one, but two verbal blunders, but understandably his feelings were hurt somewhat at being semi snubbed. As long as he's been around, I can't help but think he might've been set up (I know that might be a stretch, but you never really know) by FOX NEWS or something because he'd never fall for that open mic trick if hes on top of his game. Malcolm, Martin, Medgar and even Jesse, were a major force during the inception of the civil rights movement. Jesse was slick enough to make it through that period and come out alive and well. I'm not a big fan of his, but the fact remains that hes still here and for his son to make the kind of remarks he made about him in the interest of the Obama camp, or his own personal interests, was just wrong! I see it as a classic example of WILLIE LYNCHISM in full effect. Remember, the old v young, dark v light, FATHERS AGAINST SONS! DIVIDE AND CONQUER, thats the oldest trick in the book.

Nah, I think Jr should've kept his mouth shut as far as going to the press with his paternal problem. I think he was gullible and rushed into making those statements without really thinking about it. I'm not saying he was wrong to make them, but he was wrong to make them publicly like that and do that to his father. Hes probably in the position hes in because of the influence of Jesse Jackson Sr, even if only for the name recognition. I'm sure Obama's camp has benefitted quite a bit by having Jr publicly support him.

On a similar subject what do you think of the lawsuit filed by MARTIN III & his sister against DEXTER for control of the MLK foundation in Atlanta? They say hes blowing the dough. The foundation WAS worth over $56,000,000.00.

Tucker, I have to agree about Jesse Jr. He could have found a better way to disagree with his fathter. For example, he could have said nothing publicly. Or, if he had to, he could have said something like, "my father and I don't share the same sentiments about Barack Obama." He knows that the media loves attacking his father for every misstep. He didn't need to add on to it.

There are many uninformed or misinformed members of our society who would take us both to task for voicing an opinion other than one that favors JR. But then most of those opinions are always diametrically opposed to mine on most issues because I don't think in the singular and for the individual gain. I look at the whole first, then I work on the piece if the piece needs my attention.

btw, I'm glad we agree. Here comes the train, right about now! (LMAO, wink)

and you would be absolutely right....

Joe Madison (aka the Black Eagle) was discussing this today while talking about Sen. Obama's NAACP address.... he said that whyt america and their media are basically using this as a 'generational divide' amongst blaq/african americans... that in the long run, their 'depiction' of us being divided works to Obama's advantage regarding tryin to garner the so-called 'whyt, working class' vote....

Most of us on BFRU are certainly aware that this could well be another attempt at manipulation by the media. I doubt any of US will go for the okey doke. I'm certain our decisions and choices are based on our own interpretations of stated facts and not some reporter pushing his personal pov.

You're right again JP neither is depicted as the returning savior by the Black community at large.
