Default In the closet -- men

Lets get up in that closet for a moment gentlemen. I was having a conversation with a young man at work the other day. We were talking about saggin and the clothing styles of young men today. He's 27 btw. He was telling me about the "shovel toe" shoes, jeans, etc. When he got through describing to me the kind of clothes at home in his closet, I said you know something Carlos, I didn't hear you mention one suit, not one. I asked him if he had a suit and he said NO. He said he didn't like to wear suits. When I asked him why, he said I just don't like them.

Now I might be older than most of you. I might be ol school and all of that stuff. BUT!, every man needs at least one suit. Carlos says he goes to church regularly. I asked him what did he wear to church since he didn't own a suit? He said shirt and matching slacks, with "shovel toed" shoes. (I guess you can tell I hate those flat nosed shoes.) I had the same conversation with my son. I've told him for years he needs to have at least one suit. If for no other reason than to be buried in, hes 26, definitely on the endangered species list. As for me, I've got at least seven suits. Probably 4 or 5 pairs of dress shoes, 5 or 6 ties, etc.

How many suits you got?

I have about 7 or 8 suits but then again I am considered old skool, I wore suits to Sunday school when I was a youngster. I agree that every young man should have at least 1or 2 suits, if for no other reason they need a suit for job interviews, funerals, weddings, religious services and even court. Hoever, I must agree that a lot of the rap atrist such as Jay Z and Ditty are now sporting suits.

Hubby has 4 suits and several shirt and tie sets to switch up with, and lots of ties for GP. NEVER wears them except to funerals.

Now how come so many youngsters seemed to've missed that? Today I saw a guy with the waistband of his pants just below the cheeks of his ass. He wore some cotton boxers that were damn near totally exposed and he was standing wide legged, like a child that had just shit his pants, to keep his pants from falling down. Not only did he look ridiculous, but he looked ridiculous and NASTY! Why do young Black men do that to themselves. It was hard to believe when he came out of the house, that was the look he wanted to achieve.

GIRL YOU KNOW YOU ARE TOO FUNNY! On the real though why don't you suggest he put one on, just for the hell of it, or maybe someone'll see him in it and be impressed. Ever notice how some men can wear a suit and be just as comfortable. Its like they had on a pair of sweat pants and sneakers. Then others seem so stiff and uncomfortable as long as they've got on that damn suit and can't wait to get out of it?

Hey Tuck, I never said that owning a suit is old skool, I said that I am considered old skool, due to my age and value system, not because I own and sport a few vines. As far as the young bucks are concerned, I have no idea why they are not following the example of some of todays rappers. However, I am seeing more and more rappers wearing suits: Usher, Nelly, TI and others.

It's hard to understand not owning a suit. If you look back to images in the 20's, 30's and 40's in cities in the North, it seems that the only clothes young men wore were suits. Jeans were reserved for their, "backwards" farmhand cousins in North Carolina. Aside from the financial obligations, I dont see any excuse for not owning at least one suit, when a basic one could be bought new at Target for about $80 and you could buy a used one and have it altered for about $50 from the thrift shop. No excuses.

Looky here Jamal, stop wigglin like a fish out of water. I thought on that line in that post a long time before I posted it because I didn't want to argue or offend you. I was just talking with you. You don't have to defend everything you say to me man. I know you didn't say wearing a suit is ol school. I'm just talkin with you kiddo. I'm sure I'm older than you so I take advantage of what ever priviledges that affords me. I try not to be argumentive or offensive in my posts unless that is what I'm trying to achieve. I am a writer among other things, so I try not to be misunderstood about anything I write. I like the tone of most of your posts and if you don't mind, i will continue to talk to you, okay? Now about them winter checked suits you got in your closet, tee hee.

Heyyyyyy, now thats how you shoot! "Jeans were reserved for their, "backwards" farmhand cousins in North Carolina. " Is this a re to cc5ks country ass? LMAO But for real though, you make an excellent point. Denim used to mean work or play clothes to Black people. When you got dressed UP, you didn't put on no jeans, you put on a suit, and I aint talkin bout no back in the 40s, 50s and 60s. There was a time when you couldn't melt and pour a Black man into a cowboy hat and boots. For that matter to be seen in a pick up truck was considered country as hell and your rep would be permanently injured. Now Cadillac makes the Escalade, nothing but a fancy pick up truck. Like my nephew who drives a Ford says, what a mother fu""er gon "PICK UP" for commercial purposes in an Escalade. You bet not scratch that bed!

Good post though man, good post!

Obviously cc isn't the only one who likes to play verbal volleyball, however, you not only like to play verbal volleyball, you like to play verbal chess. Nice try Tuck, but I'm not taking the bait. You knew what you were doing when you questioned my knowledge of what old skool is. I'm not saying you're a troll kiddo, but you do quite a good imitation of one. I see you have gone from "thinking you are older than me", to being "sure that you are older than me". So far your age hasn't afforded you any priviledges, because you have yet to act like a 58 year old man. I'm just talking with you Tuckster, I don't want to argue or offend you. Check, your move BTW, take those double knit plaid zoot suits out your closet.

I sure hope that phrase of yours doesn't catch on. Anyway, let me jump in here and tell you how I roll. I enjoy debating with folks who really put some thought into their position on issues and how they write their posts to reflect that, but I do not enjoy bickering over the meaning of words or what someone thinks someone meant when they were quoting someone who was trying to explain something who... you get the point. That's what I would consider "verbal volleyball" and I don't wany anything to do with it. I'll stick with what I'm good at, and that's the real thing (bump, set, spike)!

I like to be clear on what my values are and how I apply them to any given situation to come up with my position on the issue, and since I have limited time to spend on this forum, I generally prefer to do so as quickly and succinctly as possible. If your impression of me has been different, I'd like to think it's been a misunderstanding.

Again undue credit. I don't even know what that is in re to the internet. I've been on BFRU for quite some time now. Any chronological re I make is to "THAT" seniority and it does have its privileges, as you too shall see should you last as long. I just happen to notice you're still posting in the double digits. You got a long way to go yet junior. But if you continue to be a shining example of perseverance, you'll make it by 2010.

Care to tell me how a 58 yr old man should act, iyo? Perhaps you know better than I.

No offense taken. I rather enjoy a bit of verbal jousting from time to time. I abhor FTH arguments though and quickly dismiss myself from them. Oh btw, thats short for "FOR THE HELL OF IT" arguments. You know when you're really not trying to make a point, just arguing fth! And I just got one of them zoots out of the cleaners to wear this weekend. I was planning on wearing the yellow one, with the yellow ostrich feather, in the yellow hat, with the yellow socks and shoes to match! NOT! LMAO

Do you call disecting someones post into sub quotes, so that you can respond to each individual sentence "succinct" , maybe you need to look up the defintion of succinct.
