CAUSE OF INGROWING HAIRS:
When you shave, the hairs root is left in the follicle. Most will grow out of the follicle without problem, some however curve round into the surrounding skin and becomes ingrown. The hair will irritates the skin and can cause a lumpy reaction. The next time you shave you nick the tops of the lumps, worsening the inflammation and perhaps allowing an infection to occur.
the best way to deal with it is, soak a towel in hot water and put it on the skin for a few minutes to soften the hairs. Then very carefully, using sterilised tweezers pull the end of the hair out of the bump. Don't pull the whole hair out of the skin, just the loose end, resist the temptation to pluck it, if you do the follicle could heal over and the new hair when it grows will have the same ingrowing problem.
to prevent them, the best thing to do is shave in the direction of the hair growth. Exfoliate. Or try using a razor with one blade or an electric shaver.
(i only know this because my husband gets them too...that and I'm a cosmetologist )

I use an electric razor and rarely get any. But I need at least a few now and then so my wife has an excuse to torture me with a pair of tweezers.

Although its a hard habit to break, always shave in the same direction. You've trained the hairs on your face to grow in a certain manner if you've been shaving for some time. Its the same thing with the hair on your head. Comb or brush the hair on your head in the same direction all the time, that trains it to grow that way.

What TUCKER said. I use to use Magic Shave long time ago but, a barber told me shave in the same direction as your hair grows. I now have zero bumps and use Schick triple blades.

That works on some, but some people have that deep from Mother Africa hair, and it has man strength. Some people need tweezers, cremes, razors and some even may consider laser surgery.

Listen Bro, I had the same problem when I was in the service (we had to be clean shaven) I tried magic shave, an electric shaver etc. and nothing worked. I went to the doctor with a severe case of razor bumps. The doctor said that I had pseudo folliculitis (technical term for razor bumps), he gave me a shaving wavier and I was allowed to wear a short beard. Unless you are not allowed to wear a beard, the only cure I know of is to stop shaving. A close cut beard will also stop the ingrown hairs. I have a beard and my job allows me to wear a beard as long as I have a shaving waiver from my doctor. If you want my opinion, rock your beard rubik, the creator gave us facial hair for a reason.

this forum is amazing. thank you for all your suggestions. i consulted my brother-in-law about my situation. he too is suffering the same problem. he recommended me a product called Pain Free Easy Shave which is specialized for this kind of problem. so far i'm pretty happy with the results.

will try not to shave against the grain this time. or possibly grow a goatee but i don't know if i could pull that one off.
