Celebrating Kwanzaa'08

Hey Family,

I am new here! I like the layout...seems easy to get around. So...I will be back on the regular.

I am adding some extra's to my Kwanzaa celebration this year(visit iKwanzaa.com), how about you?

We will be reflecting on the seven principles of Kwanzaa while we watch the new film, The Black Candle....and you know we will be discussing the significance of Obama's historic win.

What do you have planned?

Like OBAMA on other issues I am pro choice on KWAANZA, I recognize the significance of it, but I don't celebrate it........Not yet anyway. I think of it, much like JUNETEENTH. Did you celebrate that? If so what did you do?

well i don't celebrate kwanza only because my parents didn't teach us that growing up so i don't really know too much about it but we do celebrate juneteenth with alot of bbq and family time going on.

Kwanzaa and Juneteenth are both celebrations, but they do have a different purposes. Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery and Kwanzaa celebrates our heritage, including slavery.

Kwanzaa helps us to consider our roots by reflecting on a collective past and our current circumstances, with an eye toward the future. Our legacy begins well before enslavement....

I know what you mean, I learned about Kwanzaa is college. You can always learn about it...it is...all about you(us)... connects you to your cultural roots, without diminishing other cultural expressions.

...this year I think Kwanzaa is going to be more special.

Both are well deserved celebrations. Notice I didn't say holidays, but rather celebrations. I'm not sure bit I seem to recall Juneteenth being a day of emancipation celebration specifically for the slaves of Texas, is that even close?

Here is where I philosophically disagree with those who are of a likemind to yours. I feel out heritage as BLACK americans began with slavery. We may've gone into the melding pot a plethora of various races, shades of Black and various degrees of freedom, but we came out all one and the same, SLAVES! If nothing else, we had this one thing in common. What we are today, is a hybrid of only GOD knows what. As a direct result of that enslavement and the barbarian influence into our history, we are what we are today and OUR history began with our enslavement and events afterward, not prior to our enslavement. While we may have some distant connection to those who were not forced to endure 400 + yrs of enslavement in this country, most of any semblance of kinship was bred out of us during the period of active captivity and bought out of those who stayed behind on the dark continent and dark countries.

Not sure if the bolded comes off as you intended it... If so, then it would probably be those white rednecks JP posted a while ago that tried to plot an Obama assassination to be the ones celebrating Kwanzaa.
