Interracial Dating In Memphis
|
|
The question was "Can Memphis accept interracial dating?" My response was as follows:
tucker said:
Modern day Memphis is a city that is just as divided today as it ever was. We're a city with an eye on the future and a foot in the past. We celebrate the events of an April and an August day. One is the day Dr King was assassinated and the other is the day the "King," Elvis died. We've managed to not only survive, but prosper in many cases thanks to the guilty consciouses of those determined to prove their not racists.
Now the venue of "Interracial Dating." This has long been a social taboo that has been tactfully avoided since America and the south admitted its part in the atrocities of slavery. At one time, it wasn't unusual to see a white man with a Black woman on the streets of Memphis. In fact it might've been considered quite fashionable. On the other hand to see a Black man with a white woman automatically meant some kind of Jim Crow Law was being broken. The feelings of those respective periods still exist today and those feelings stem from the roots of slavery, and southern slavery in particular.
A white man with a Black woman. "You go girl!" A Black man with a white woman. "WHY?" That is pretty much the attitude in the Black community as I know it in re to "Interracial Dating." "Can Memphis really accept it?" There are some things we aren't given a choice about, an NBA team, pay television in February 2009 and interracial dating are just a few of them. The city and the citizens don't have to like it, but we do have to accept it. There were some who said Memphis would never have a Black Mayor. There are always going to be those who choose to push the limits of social mores'. There are always going to be those who think they're going to compensate for the wrongs of their forefathers by sacrificing themselves. There are always going to be those who think they've got the PRIZE, but don't realize how they're confusing they're present identity and that of their future.

You have to be talking about the Black female community "You go girl"??? Not too many Black men are happy to see one get away and cheer her on. LOL Now, since you did say Memphis and you live there I'll have to take your word for it. I just can't imagine Black women seeing one of their sistas with a white guy and saying "ewwwwww she got her a white man...she so lucky....you go girl". Making it sound like the white man is the prize.

Ummm...I for one find it repugnant either way! And I'm not unabashed to speak it LOUDLY when I see it. It is an abomination to me (being a by-product of one) There have been many discussion in our family about how this will be addressed with our kids. Because all of my siblings are married to white folk except me, and I accept it because let's face it there are none of us in Montana to choose from. Of course I'm the only one who was shipped away and fully exposed to the black side of my family because of the deep melanin I possess whilst they're all passers.
All my current and future niece/nephews look white or barely mixed. I still love each and every one of them but, I feel it's my job to let them know you still have a little of me in you too. One of my youngest brothers is the worst, he is so proud of his blackness he is the blackest white boy ever! LOL!!!
He called me one day and said "Sis I love being black!" I was like what brought that on? He told me how in Cali when he went to his meeting the white people were so rude and callous toward the black people that were attending, they not knowing he was mixed, made typical racist remarks until he checked their asses!
He lives in two worlds and he hates it, because of his skin color he's white, but his soul is that of a black man and the white people find it hard to accept.
With all that said...mixed children have become thier own race, and whitey can't accept it.

Its not just relevant to Memphis Bishman. That is exactly the attitude that is most prevelant here though. I was somewhat surprised a time ago to hear a couple of little girls, 13/14 talking about having a baby by an Arab, or a Mexican so he'd have "good" hair. Now thats how shallow things are here among many young women. You think the attitude is different in Cincin, or Clev? I promise you, it aint!
Oh yeah, many of them DO think the barbarian is THE PRIZE!

Repugnant? Abomination? Those are strong words, KS. Especially when there are so many shades of gray (or should I say shades of brown).
Care to elaborate why it's repugnant to you when someone is attracted and/or falls in love with someone of a different race? You think it's repugnant that a white man could be attracted to you? Or fall in love with you, given the chance? I don't think you're that bad...

I've been an equal opportunity lover all my life. Ben Franklin said it best...."In the dark, all cats are gray".

Again having lived my life and negatively treated like an object based on my percieved race, (I mean looking @ me there's no way she could be mixed, I'm just another nigger to them) by white men, yes it's is repugnant that a black/white man would choose a black/white chick solely based on color. Yes I'm judging damn it!!!! Based on my personal experiences, and those of my family who live this shit everyday. Yeah it's great to be accecpted but, what happens when you're only accepted on one plane and not the other?
Do you know how it feels to be loved/show love dearly by my white mama unconditionally, only to be dismissed as some nigger by the general populus? To have my brothers and sister tell me of the shit they endure because they can go between? Can YOU tell me? It's hard to hate and love somthing that is a part of you? NO I can't see a white man loving me...Hell naw and don't want one to either!
