I think shes coming from the POV of strengthening the household and family structure. Being a minority, when those few Black males who manage to beat the odds and become "successful" decide to "fly the coop" so to speak, it weakens a race of people that, as a minority, really can't afford it. Personally I understand matters of the heart, but sometimes the heart has to suffer for the "GREATER" good. A noble gesture, true, but when centuries of barriers are broken down for the benefit of a people and those who've benefited seek immediate gratification, usually in the singular, it certainly doesn't speak well for the people.

This is the immediate gratification attitude I spoke of. How does a people, constantly under siege, withstand crisis' from without and within. ROME itself, arguably the greatest nation in history, was conquered from within. Had it not been for outside interference, who knows where Black american mankind would be today. When Black men wander for whatever reason, the entire infrastructure of Black society is weakened. Those of neutral identity like Tiger, Mariah, Heinz and yes Obama are not the rule, but the exception to it. Its nothing personal against anyone, but someone much wiser than my own most humble self once said "HOT WATER is good for washing, COLD WATER is good to drink, but lukewarm water will always get thrown out!

Now I'm pretty sure Pearl Jr didn't say all that, but I think that is the essence of her thought pattern.
