In Feb, a transvestite, Dewayne Johnson, was arrested and charged with prostitution and disorderly conduct. While being fingerprinted Ms Johnson says one of the officers called to him "Come on Faggot, Sissy, Punk Ho, its your turn." He said he told him his mother named him none of those and he turned his head and refused to respond. At this point 2 officers came over and while one held him down, he was punched repeatedly by the other who had wrapped handcuffs around his fists. Ms Johnson is 6'5" and weighs 245. She said she tried not to fight back as long as she could but when he didn't stop hitting her, she was forced to defend herself, at which point she was MACED.
All this took place in front of several other officers, a nurse, other arrestees and a surveillance camera. Johnson says she begged the nurse to help her after the beating, but she ignored her. All the allegations are backed up by the film shown on the news recently. The story broke because after getting no response from the police department in re to a settlement from Ms Johnson's attorneys, they decided to go public and pursue litigation. The charges against her were eventually and strangely dropped btw.
The two officers have been penalized. One was fired and the other was suspended. I don't think that was nearly enough. Every officer on that film that stood there and witness the conduct of those officers and did nothing needs to be dealt with administratively! That is the only way to restore any kind of confidence in the abilities and concerns for the public of these officers. If 4 guy are in a car and 1 robs a store, they all get charged with something, or don't they. The law of the public is also the law of the police. I'd be willing to bet if Ms Johnson were seeming to get the better of her tormentors in that fight, some of those guys would've stepped in and did something!
This is what I've been arguing with some of you all the time. People have to be held accountable for doing their jobs. We can't keep turning a blind eye, or saying "Thats okay," when it isn't!
YA GOTTA STOP COMPROMISING!
